Lafayette collection, 1786-1825.

Collection of printed materials chiefly documenting the honors accorded the Marquis de Lafayette during his return visit to the United States, 1824-1825. Includes invitation, 27 Oct. 1786, Paris, France, to [Thomas Rhett?] Smith, for dinner with La Fafayette. Remainder of collection consists of printed material documenting Lafayette's visit to South Carolina, March 1825, including a badge worn by Richard O'Neale, Sr., at a reception for Lafayette. Printed in 1824, the 3" x 9" ribbon features Lafayette's likeness and an account of his military service. Accounts of celebrations honoring Lafayette include newspaper clippings, 7 Oct. 1824, re his visit to Washington; ca. 1876, re his March 1825 visit to Camden, S.C.; and photostatic reproduction from The State, 25 Mar. 1901, re his March 1825 vist to Columbia, S.C. Photocopied items re the Charleston, S.C., visit include an invitation to a reception at Fort Moultrie, 15 Mar. 1825, and addresses, 1825, in Latin and English made by students of the Philosophical and Classical Seminary of Charleston.

Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, marquis de Lafayette was born at Chavaniac, Auvergne, in 1757, to an old, illustrious family of the provincial and military nobility.
